Dalian Library

It comes out of the darkness of the underworld and is seemingly shaped by nature once it reaches ground level: this library is the outcome of 10 Design’s teamwork. The ultimate purpose of this 55,400 square meter architectural structure is to enshroud the visitor in a unique environment in terms of libraries and media centers. In the ground it forms several undulated layers that behave like the roots of the building, whilst on the surface it stands as sturdy as an urban landmark. The contrast between the brass façade, the courtyard and the green tones, enhances the variety of spatial conditions. The tower fulfills and thrills the visitors’ mind with an outstanding view, and is also designated as a social space where people can pace around or share a cup of tea. Moreover, as nature itself, the building will “grow” and develop over time: the dark grey brass will develop a patina, while the small voids that are made out of an anodized aluminum brass will keep the same color and reflection to the light. All the structure is in tune with the surrounding environment: from the panoramic top cafè located on the tower roof, where one can enjoy the view of a green hill, to the open shell amphitheater with a delightful view of the southern sea. The scheme was submitted to the Dalian Planning Bureau for an international challenge where the 10 Design team, which is composed by Ted Givens, Mohamad Ghamlouch, Emre Icdem, Judy Chan and Abraham Fung, can compete side by side with some of the world’s most brilliant minds of architectural development, such as Zaha Hadid and Kengo Kuma.
